Who, What, Why
I’m Carin – the cat lady behind Hide&Scratch. And yes, this is a SMALL business – I’m a one-cat-lady show!
Hide&Scratch is my passion project.
I’ve been a cat lover my whole life (since well before I was old enough to be considered a cat “lady”!)
My family had cats from the day I was born and during our summer visits to my cousins’ farm in Wisconsin, you could reliably find me playing with the barn cats. I was most happy when our visits took place earlier in the summer rather than later because of the much larger volume of (and smaller sized) kittens.
I can still remember clear as a bell the day when I was probably 7 or so and my uncle was “educating” me on how to tell the boy kittens from the girl kittens. How? You shake them gently. If they rattled, they were boys. If they didn’t, they were girls. Whys that? Because the boy kittens had nuts and the girl kittens didn’t. (Groan…)
Moving away to college was the first time in my life that I found myself without a cat at the foot of my bed. As soon as I got my first apartment though, Zoe (see pic of how tiny she was!) joined me in my life to make that apartment “home.”
As I got older and started travelling the world, I’ve found myself unable to walk past a cat without saying hi (and usually snapping a pic) and I’m always delighted when I cross paths with one – I could swear that they sometimes seek me out to make my day!
I’ve started documenting these cats and their stories with #carinscatsaroundtheworld on Instagram and I hope you enjoy them as much as I’m enjoying the reminiscing.
Working to grow Hide&Scratch is how I continue to connect with cats around the world (beyond my ongoing travels that is!) while I dabble in the world of small-business ecommerce and all of the puzzles and challenges that come along with it.
I hope to add your favorite feline to the growing list of cats out there that have and love their Hide&Scratch and look forward to seeing pictures of them enjoying their boxes!
